Photos Set 2: Land Search and Cleanup

Air Force men were bused out to a search area each morning and marched “fingertip-to-fingertip” looking for the missing bomb. The line of men is visible in the center of the photo. |
If a searcher found something interesting, he marked it with a bit of ribbon or toilet paper. |
The man on the left is using a PAC 1S to measure alpha radiation. The device, designed for laboratory use, broke easily on the jagged rocks of the search area. |
Air Force men loaded contaminated dirt and vegetation into 4,810 barrels for shipment back to the United States. The barrels were staged on the beach awaiting pickup from the Navy. |
On March 24, men moved the last barrel off the beach and onto the USNS Lt. George W.G. Boyce for shipment to Charleston, SC. |
