Air Force men were bused out to a search area each morning and marched "fingertip-to-fingertip" looking for the missing bomb. The line of men is visible in the center of the photo.
If a searcher found something interesting, he marked it with a bit of ribbon or toilet paper.
The man on the left is using a PAC 1S to measure alpha radiation. The device, designed for laboratory use, broke easily on the jagged rocks of the search area.
Air Force men loaded contaminated dirt and vegetation into 4,810 barrels for shipment back to the United States. The barrels were staged on the beach awaiting pickup from the Navy.
On March 24, men moved the last barrel off the beach and onto the USNS Lt. George W.G. Boyce for shipment to Charleston, SC.
